About Clayton

Clayton became a city because residents wanted local control over land use at the foot of Mount Diablo. In the March 1964 incorporation election, 312 of the community's 364 registered voters participated, and the measure passed 251 to 61. In 1964, the new half-square-mile city had about 600 residents; its boundaries and population later expanded, but the historic center remained near Main Street and Clayton Road. The earlier town had been founded by Joel Clayton in 1857 at the mountain's northern base. Today, downtown community activity clusters around The Grove, City Hall, the historical museum, and Clayton Community Library. The Grove has a gazebo, picnic tables, playground, and seasonal splash pad, and the city's 2026 Concerts in The Grove series scheduled eight Saturday performances from May through August.

The George Cardinet Trail starts beside the library and follows Mount Diablo Creek for 1.46 miles, crossing six bridges and linking several open spaces and neighborhood parks. Clayton Community Park supplies ball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, and access to walking and bicycle routes in the adjacent hills near the entrance to Mount Diablo State Park. The county-operated library opens Tuesday through Saturday and includes a 3D printer, study and meeting rooms, assistive technology, early-learning materials, and programs for children, teens, and adults. For weekday regional travel, County Connection Route 10 runs along Clayton Road between the library area and Concord BART.
