About Clayton

Clayton's Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library returned to its South Church Street home in July 2026 after a $2.5 million renovation. New study rooms, a laptop bar, expanded seating, updated technology, and flexible collaboration areas give the six-day-a-week library a broader role than its circulating collection. A few blocks away, Town Square hosts a Saturday market from spring through fall, free outdoor concerts from May through September, and Last Friday gatherings for much of the year. Those recurring programs make the older center a regular destination even as most recent growth has spread beyond it. Clayton grew from 16,116 residents in 2010 to 26,307 in 2020 and an estimated 32,633 in 2025. The latest five-year profile pairs that growth with 63 percent owner occupancy, a median owner-occupied value of $329,600, monthly costs of $1,803 for mortgage holders, median gross rent of $1,661, and a median household income of $78,822.

From 2020 through 2024, residents under 18 made up 26 percent of the population, and workers averaged 31 minutes of travel to work. Outdoor routes tie newer neighborhoods to town parks and the Neuse River. The four-mile, ten-foot-wide Clayton River Walk follows the river as part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and East Coast Greenway, then joins the paved Sam's Branch Greenway for continued travel toward Wake County and Raleigh's Falls Lake Dam. East Clayton Community Park provides ball and soccer fields, an 18-hole disc-golf course, loop trails, picnic pavilions, an inclusive playground, and a dog park across the street. Nearer downtown, Municipal Park pairs a free summer splash pad with basketball and futsal courts, a playground, shelters, a walking loop, a lawn, and a performance stage.
