Clayton, NM

Clayton is the Union County seat in northeastern New Mexico, sitting near the Rabbit Ear Mountains and the old Cimarron Cutoff of the Santa Fe Trail. The 2020 census counted 2,643 residents. Wagon freight, cattle drives, and trail traffic all passed through this part of the plains before the railroad arrived in 1887. Clayton then grew as a trading and shipping point, with the surrounding ranch country feeding the town's stores and rail connections. The town's name is now associated with the first New Mexico stop many travelers reach on the Santa Fe Trail route from the east.

The old trail still shapes the local landmarks. Rabbit Ear Mountain rises near the route, and the Goodnight-Loving Trail brought cattle herds through the area. Clayton Lake State Park, fifteen miles north, combines a fishing lake with a trackway of fossilized dinosaur footprints. In town, the Herzstein Memorial Museum occupies a former Methodist church and holds Union County and Santa Fe Trail history. Clayton's county-seat work, agricultural economy, and tourism all sit on top of the same older pattern: wagons came for trade, trains came for freight, and the high plains kept sending people through.
