About Clayton

Clayton is a village on the St. Lawrence River in Jefferson County, at the eastern end of the town that shares its name. The 2020 census counted 1,705 residents. The river and the Thousand Islands give Clayton a waterfront identity, while NY 12 and NY 12E bring traffic into the village from Watertown and the surrounding North Country. The village grew during the era of river steamers and remains organized around its commercial blocks, docks, parks, and waterfront streets. The Antique Boat Museum and Clayton Opera House give the village two distinctive institutions, and the Clayton Riverwalk links the commercial center with river overlooks and access.

The Sissy Danforth Rivergate Trail follows an old rail right-of-way through the village, adding a land route to a place usually read from the water. Village services, shops, marinas, and seasonal visitors share the same small footprint. Clayton's local scoop is a river village with working municipal routines and a museum-and-theater pair that keep the waterfront connected to the town center.
