Clayville, RI

Clayville is a census-designated place mostly in Foster, with the remainder in Scituate, in western Rhode Island. The 2020 census counted 312 residents. Routes 14 and 102 cross the settlement, while the Clayville Historic District follows Cole Avenue, Field Hill Road, Plainfield Pike, and Victory Highway. The district is a crossroads mill village with more than 100 contributing buildings, structures, and sites dating from about 1720 to 1925.

The old mill pond and its circa-1847 dam still organize the historic landscape. The Clayville Christian Church, built from 1867 to 1871, its cemetery, and the former schoolhouse sit among homes and roads that preserve the village's industrial and agricultural past. Nearby wooded trails around Westconnaug Reservoir and Westconnaug Meadows add a present-day recreation layer, while the Foster-Scituate town line runs through the village's historic core. Clayville is a small Rhode Island community whose daily map is made from two towns, two state routes, an old mill site, and a remarkably intact crossroads district.
