About Clear Lake

Clear Lake is a town in the northeast corner of Steuben County, making it Indiana’s northeasternmost community. The 2020 Census counted 354 residents. The town wraps around Clear Lake and several smaller bodies of water, with the state line and the lake shore shaping its unusual corner-of-the-state geography. A post office operated here from 1870 to 1903, and incorporation came in 1932 after residents spent years petitioning, appealing, and organizing around local control.

The incorporation story was tied to practical lake questions: water quality, traffic, boating, sanitation, and shoreline changes. Those concerns still fit the way Clear Lake operates today. The town’s civic network includes a lake association, yacht and ski clubs, a conservancy, and a wood-water-ski museum, while the town government handles public notices and lake-use rules. Clear Lake is small in population and broad in shoreline, with ordinary town administration meeting the demands of a year-round community built around a body of water at Indiana’s northern edge, with the lake at its center.
