Cleveland, AL

Cleveland sits in central Blount County with the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River passing the town’s northwest side. The community was settled in the 1820s and first went by Dry Creek Crossroads, then Blackwood’s Crossroads after local entrepreneur John Blackwood. The present name came later, but the older names still tell you how the place began: as a crossing and a small local trading point rather than a planned city.

U.S. 231 now runs through Cleveland, with town hall, water service, police, and fire departments gathered along the road. That road-facing civic setup fits the town’s geography; the river marks one edge, while the rest of central Blount County opens out beyond it. Cleveland is the sort of Alabama place where the old crossroads name, the river bend, and the daily business of keeping utilities and roads running are all part of the same story. The river is close enough to feel present without turning Cleveland into a riverfront town.
