Cleveland, MN

Cleveland is a Le Sueur County city established as a village in 1854 and incorporated as a city in 1904. It was named for Cleveland, Ohio, and grew in the inland part of a county whose first settlements clustered along the Minnesota River. The heavy woods, sticky soils, and muddy roads once made travel difficult between river towns and interior communities; Cleveland formed as those inland farms began to need markets, mail, and schools.

Today Cleveland Public School District carries students from prekindergarten through 12th grade at Cleveland Elementary and Cleveland Secondary. The city keeps its own centennial memory too: residents marked the centennial of incorporation in 2004, and the local historical society remains a place for county questions and research. Cleveland’s setting is still agricultural, but the city’s school, roads, and nearby Ten Thousand Lakes tourism give it a broader local orbit. It is a small Minnesota city with a village beginning and a school-centered present. County roads pull the city toward Le Center and Mankato for larger errands and county connections.
