Cleveland was built around the winding Cuyahoga River right where it empties into Lake Erie. Large freighters still navigate the shipping channels, yet on warm afternoons you will see rowing clubs, paddleboarders, and water taxis sharing the river. Lake Erie offers sandy beaches and scenic sunset spots like Edgewater Park just minutes from downtown, while the Cleveland Metroparks system wraps the region in miles of hiking and biking trails. The local economy has shifted along with the landscape, growing into a major center for healthcare, higher education, and research.

Healthcare and education now anchor the eastern corridor along Euclid Avenue, driven by major employers like the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and Case Western Reserve University. Right next to these campuses sits University Circle, one of the most concentrated cultural districts in the country. The grassy park at Wade Oval connects the botanical gardens, the natural history museum, and the renowned Cleveland Museum of Art, which keeps its permanent collection free to the public year-round. Commuting between these hubs is simple, thanks to the HealthLine rapid transit bus running directly between downtown and the east side medical district.

Across the river on the near west side, vibrant neighborhoods like Ohio City and Tremont offer historic brick streets, local cafes, and a bustling food scene. The iconic West Side Market serves as a community staple, where regional vendors have sold fresh produce, artisan cheeses, and bakery treats in a grand hall for over a century. Back downtown, Playhouse Square forms one of the largest performing arts districts in the nation, drawing crowds year-round for touring Broadway productions and concerts. Getting around is easy too, with the Red Line train providing a direct link from residential neighborhoods straight into downtown and out to the airport.
