Cleveland, OK

Cleveland is a Pawnee County city on the Arkansas River, with Keystone Lake just to the east and Cleveland City Lake about seven miles west. The 2020 census counted 3,205 residents. The place started as Herbert, after homesteader Willis H. Herbert opened a post office here in 1893, then took the Cleveland name as the town developed. The Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad reached the river crossing in 1904 and pushed the town into the regional map. Today the city sits between lake country, prairie, and the Pawnee County roads leading toward Tulsa and the Osage hills.

Cleveland Public Schools keep the town's school center close, while Keystone Lake adds boating, fishing, and shoreline trips to the local routine. The railroad is long gone as a daily force, but the Arkansas River crossing still marks the reason the city is here. Cleveland's local scoop is a small Oklahoma city with a post-office beginning, a railroad-era name change, and two very different lakes at either end of town.
