Clifton is a census-designated place in Mesa County, just east of Grand Junction on Colorado's Western Slope. The post office opened in 1900, and the community was named for cliffs near the town site, which fits the desert-edge landscape around the Grand Valley. Clifton is served by local elementary schools and is close to Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. It feels like a residential and service community tied to orchards, mesas, river corridors, and the practical east side of the Grand Junction area.
