About Clinton

Just after midnight on April 15, 1865, John Wilkes Booth and David Herold stopped at the Surratt Tavern in Surrattsville—now Clinton—and retrieved hidden guns and field glasses while fleeing after President Lincoln’s assassination. The tavern, owned by Mary Surratt, had served Booth and his conspirators as a refuge and planning location. It is now the Surratt Historic Site and Museum, which also interprets the site’s history of enslavement and racial justice. Founded as a crossroads in the 1770s, the community was known as Surratt’s Villa, then Surrattsville, and as Robeystown from 1865 to 1878 before becoming Clinton. The Prince George’s County census-designated place counted 38,760 residents in 2020 and lies near Joint Base Andrews.
