Cloudcroft, NM

Perched high up at nearly 8,700 feet in the Sacramento Mountains, Cloudcroft offers a true alpine escape surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest. What started in the late 1890s as a logging camp and railroad retreat has grown into a quiet village of around 750 residents. Life up here feels completely removed from the desert floor below, trading high summer temperatures for cool mountain air, tall pine trees, and snowy winter months.

Everyday life revolves around the walkable shops along Burro Avenue and community gatherings at Zenith Park, which hosts local favorites like the May Fair, July Jamboree, and Oktoberfest. Despite its small footprint, the village has its own public school district that serves the wider mountain area, alongside cozy diners, a local grocery store, and endless hiking trails. It is a tight-knit, slow-paced town where neighbors know each other and the outdoors are a part of daily living.
