Clover, VA

Clover is a Halifax County community north of US 360, about 14 miles northeast of South Boston. It was an incorporated town from 1895 until 1998, when it returned to unincorporated status, but the old town identity still shows in the crossroads, historic homes, and school stories. The nearby Black Walnut plantation house and farm is on the National Register, while tributaries of the Roanoke River drain the surrounding rural country. Clover's landscape is Virginia Piedmont: tobacco-era roads, rolling fields, and long connections between small communities.

The Rosenwald school built around 1921 or 1922 is the detail that gives Clover a deeper civic history. Its three-teacher campus served Black children during segregation, part of the broader Rosenwald school movement that helped communities build schools when public investment was unequal. Today Clover sits in the Halifax County service network, with US 360 pointing southwest to South Boston and northeast toward Keysville. The old school site, Black Walnut, road connections, and rural homes make Clover legible as a community shaped by education, land, and changing forms of local government.
