Coalgate, OK

Coalgate is Coal County's seat in southeastern Oklahoma, where U.S. 75 meets State Highway 31. The 2020 census counted 1,667 residents. County offices and the courthouse give the small city a public-sector role, while the main roads connect it to Atoka and the communities of the old coal district. The Coal County Mining and Historical Museum keeps the extractive past visible in the present-day civic landscape.

Coalgate began in 1889 as the Liddle coal camp in the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. William "Bill" Liddle, superintendent of the Atoka Coal and Mining Company, located the mine site; the settlement took the name Coalgate on January 23, 1890. Coal shipments shaped its first decades, and the town became county seat after Oklahoma statehood, when Coal County moved its government from Lehigh. A 1909 bond for a courthouse and jail marks the transition from mining camp to county center. Today, the courthouse, highway corridor, and museum sit on top of that layered history.
