Coalmont, TN

Coalmont is a Grundy County city on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, a few miles from Tracy City and Altamont. The town was first known as Coal Dale; the name Coalmont took hold in 1903, and the post office opened that year. By 1904 the Sewanee Coal, Coke and Land Company was building a mining town with company-owned homes, stores, and civic buildings. The Mountain Goat Railroad reached Coalmont in 1905, linking the coal fields to the plateau’s larger industrial network.

Mining shaped the town’s blocks and family history, while coke ovens and the Coalmont Bank Building preserve pieces of that industrial era. The railroad tracks to Palmer were removed decades ago, but State Route 56 still carries through-trips between Tracy City and Altamont. Today city hall, a public library, a fire department, Coalmont Elementary, Grundy County High School, and the community center give the former company town a practical civic framework. Coalmont sits in a landscape where coal, rail, forests, and plateau roads remain visible in the same view.
