Coatesville, IN

Coatesville is a Hendricks County town in Clay Township, centered on the small-town grid around Indiana State Highway 75. It began in the late 1860s and incorporated in 1909, but its older local memory reaches back to the railroad era, when the Pennsylvania Railroad helped give the place its start. The town has also been called West Milton and Chizzletown, names that belong to the informal side of its history.

A mill once stood over the branch east of the present elevator, and early businesses, schools, churches, and the railroad built the first town rhythm. Today Coatesville is part of Mill Creek Community School Corporation, with Cascade High School serving the district. The downtown remains the key local reference, connecting the older business story to the town’s current streets and civic life. Coatesville is a small Indiana place with a rail beginning, a creek-side mill memory, and the kind of local history that survives in school records, family names, and stories passed around town.
