About Cochiti Lake

Cochiti Lake is a Sandoval County community on the Cochiti Reservation, set beside the high-desert lake formed by a six-mile earthen dam across the Rio Grande. The Pueblo's Keresan culture and long presence in the valley are part of the setting, while the planned community grew with the lake and its recreation area. The water is used for flood control, boating, fishing, camping, and wildlife habitat, and the surrounding mesas and Jemez Mountains make the geography unmistakable.

Daily life is organized through a small but active set of local institutions. The volunteer fire and EMS department serves the town, Irene S. Sweetkind Library has books and computers, and the nearby Pena Blanca Community Center provides meeting, recreation, food-pantry, and exercise space. Cochiti Golf Club and the lake recreation area bring visitors, with a boat launch, fishing dock, swim beach, campgrounds, and a six-mile dam road. Cochiti Lake is a place where a residential community, a working reservoir, Pueblo lands, and outdoor recreation share the same high-desert edge.
