Cochiti, NM

Cochiti is a Sandoval County census-designated community centered on the Pueblo de Cochiti, a federally recognized Keresan-speaking Pueblo west of the Rio Grande. The reservation lies between Santa Fe and Albuquerque on a large tract of land, and the historic pueblo has been listed on the National Register for decades. Cochiti’s setting is part of the story: the community belongs to the Albuquerque metropolitan area while remaining tied to its own tribal government, language, land base, and ceremonial life. Pueblo cultures and Keresan people have occupied this region for thousands of years.

Education and community services keep that culture present in everyday routines. The Pueblo’s education department supports a tribal library, adult education, higher-education assistance, a language nest for young children, and a summer youth program built around conversational Keres. Cochiti Elementary serves children on the Pueblo, while nearby communities handle the wider school network. The result is a place where a historic district, a living tribal government, and ordinary services share the same geography. Cochiti is close enough to the state’s two largest northern cities for work and appointments, but its local calendar and institutions come from the Pueblo itself.
