Coffee Creek, CA

Coffee Creek is a Trinity County census-designated place at about 2,495 feet, just north of the point where Coffee Creek joins the Trinity River. It is the county's northernmost community and sits along State Route 3's Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway, so the settlement's map is organized by a creek, a river junction, and a single mountain highway. The 2020 census counted 280 residents in the CDP.

Coffee Creek Elementary serves the far northern part of the county through its own K–8 district. The school is a concrete center of local routine in a community where the next road also becomes a route into the mountains. Coffee Creek Road leaves State Route 3 and runs about 20 miles toward the Trinity Alps; the dirt road requires high-clearance vehicles and reaches trailheads in the wilderness. That combination of a tiny school district, a state scenic route, and a demanding mountain road gives Coffee Creek a distinctly geographic way of organizing daily life.
