Cohasset, CA

Cohasset is a small mountain census-designated place on Cohasset Ridge, north-northeast of Chico. The ridge runs roughly eleven miles, and its name came from an Algonquian phrase for a long rocky place. Maidu people lived here before nineteenth-century lumber and farming operations took hold. By the early 1900s, apple orchards were a major part of the local map: Cohasset growers sold fruit in Chico, and residents won medals for their apples at the 1904 St. Louis exposition. The Cohasset Community Association and Historical Society keep that ridge story visible through maps, photographs, and family histories. Cohasset is a place of timber roads, orchardland, and a high ridge above the Sacramento Valley.
