Cohutta, GA

Cohutta is a Whitfield County town just south of Tennessee, and its railroad-era identity still shows in the Red Clay Road corridor. The place emerged as a stop between Cleveland and Dalton, with local lore saying early passengers waved rags to flag down trains—hence the old Shakerag name. Just across the state line, Red Clay State Historic Park preserves a Cherokee council ground and museum; Georgia’s historic marker for Red Clay stands at the Cohutta intersection. That makes Cohutta a town where a short drive crosses state and Cherokee history at once. Add a historic downtown and the old rail stop, and the map feels very north Georgia: tracks, red clay, and the Tennessee line.
