Coldspring, TX

Coldspring is the seat of San Jacinto County, a town whose name comes from the cold spring water Joseph Graves found here. The first post office opened as Coonskin in 1847, changed to Fireman’s Hill, and became Coldspring in 1850. When San Jacinto County formed in 1870, Coldspring became its seat. A courthouse fire in 1915 led to moving the townsite to higher ground; the old county jail is one of the few visible pieces of the earlier town. Coldspring is an East Texas county seat with a spring-fed name and a town that had to move uphill.
