Colfax, IL

Colfax is a McLean County village in the Bloomington-Normal region, with Illinois Route 165 running along its northern edge and the Mackinaw River crossing the southwest side. The village was laid out in 1880 by James E. Anderson, and its position between Bloomington and Sibley gave it a useful place in the farm-road network. Colfax Creek runs through the center, so even the village grid carries the water pattern of the Mackinaw country. The creek is part of the local landscape.

Today the route still does the connecting, with Bloomington about 26 miles west-southwest and Sibley about 13 miles east. Village services, school routes, churches, local businesses, and the surrounding fields fill the ordinary week, while the river and creek provide the edges that make Colfax feel more like a settled place than a highway stop. The Bloomington-Normal metro is close enough for bigger trips, but Colfax keeps its village scale in the spaces between Route 165, the creek, and the farms.
