Colton, SD

Colton is a Minnehaha County city whose name honors J. E. Colton, a railroad official. The community grew from a creamery established in 1897, then filled out around the farm trade it generated: a Main Street, local businesses, and a newspaper called the Colton Courier that began in 1901. The first school had opened in 1879 as a one-room building founded by J. E. Colton, so education and the creamery were both part of the town's early civic frame. Sioux Falls is the regional pull, but Colton's roots are in the prairie between farms and rail lines.
