Downtown Columbia, known locally as The District, sits right alongside three college campuses: the University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College. Because of that layout, daily campus routines and neighborhood city life blend together seamlessly across about fifty square blocks. You will find indie coffee shops, local bookstores, casual diners, and music venues sharing the sidewalk with city offices and residential lofts. It is an easy-to-walk area with several thousand downtown residents, giving Columbia the lively, welcoming atmosphere of a classic midwestern college town.

The city has grown around this hub since 1821, when early settlers moved a short distance east to secure a dependable water supply along Flat Branch Creek. Today, Broadway serves as the main east-west spine through town, lined with historic brick storefronts, local businesses, and government buildings leading up to the edge of Mizzou. That original creek is now preserved within Flat Branch Park, a green gathering spot right in the middle of town. Since the university was founded in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi, Columbia has steadily evolved around this compact historic core.

Higher education and healthcare anchor the local job market. Between Mizzou, MU Health Care, and Boone Health, the city offers major career opportunities across medicine, medical research, and technology. The famous Missouri School of Journalism also draws creative talent from all over, fostering a strong culture of media, arts, and writing. That creative streak is on full display every spring during the True/False Film Fest, a world-class documentary film festival that transforms downtown theaters, bars, and street corners into busy venues for films, live music, and visiting artists.

Outside of festival season, the North Village Arts District keeps that momentum going with open gallery nights, maker spaces, and intimate concert venues. For outdoor enthusiasts, getting into nature is remarkably easy. The MKT Nature and Fitness Trail starts right at Flat Branch Park and winds nearly nine miles southwest along an old rail corridor until it meets the statewide Katy Trail near the Missouri River. It gives cyclists, joggers, and walkers a smooth, car-free path straight from downtown into the scenic mid-Missouri countryside.
