The city was planned from scratch in the late 1700s right where the Broad and Saluda rivers merge into the Congaree. Local lore says early planners made the roads broad enough so mosquitoes could not fly across them without getting tired, though modern drivers mostly appreciate the easy parking and breathable feel. Just a few blocks over, the Vista fills historic brick warehouses with popular restaurants, art galleries, and craft breweries. Right next to campus sits Five Points, an eclectic village packed with record stores, casual eateries, and vibrant nightlife. Free downtown shuttles and walkable streetscapes make hopping between dinner in the Vista and an evening stroll around the State House grounds simple.

Weekend routines in Columbia often center around the outdoors and local food. Every Saturday morning, rain or shine, the Soda City Market shuts down several blocks of Main Street for food trucks, artisans, and farmers, making it the favorite weekly gathering spot for residents. If you prefer quiet green spaces, the area boasts miles of paved riverwalks along the Saluda and Congaree rivers. Riverfront Park follows the old Columbia Canal for easy jogging, while Boyd Island offers peaceful boardwalks right where the rivers meet, giving newcomers plenty of scenic ways to unwind.
