Columbiaville, MI

Columbiaville sits along the Flint River in Lapeer County, with most of the village in Marathon Township and a small section extending into Oregon Township. Levi D. Cutting arrived with his family in 1847 and became the first settler on the village site. A sawmill built by George and Henry Niver in 1848 turned the river into the community’s first industrial advantage. When the Detroit and Bay City Railroad reached Columbiaville in 1872, lumber, milling, and rail travel gave the village a larger role in the county.

That river-and-rail history still shows up in the center of town. The former Columbiaville depot now houses the Rotary Club and public library and is listed as a Michigan historic site, while the village maintains parks, trails, and a calendar of local events. Holloway Reservoir lies along the same water system, adding a larger landscape around the compact settlement. The 2020 census counted 702 residents. Columbiaville is a small Michigan village with a specific physical story: a mill town on the Flint River, later tied to the railroad, with its civic life gathered around the old route through downtown.
