Modern architecture in Columbus appears in schools, civic buildings, public art, and even bus shelters, not only in isolated landmarks. Mid-century civic investment grew from a Cummins Foundation program that recommended designers and paid the design portion of architects' fees for eligible public projects. Cummins remains headquartered here. Columbus is also the Bartholomew County seat, about 40 miles south of Indianapolis, where the Driftwood and Flatrock rivers meet to form the East Fork White River. Its 2020 census population was 50,474. Exhibit Columbus keeps design a public activity rather than a completed historical chapter. The 2025 Yes And exhibition placed twelve free outdoor installations around downtown through November 30. In 2026, the program's Fieldwork season shifted toward stewardship, research, and inquiry; its organizers identify five permanent downtown works that began as earlier commissions.

The same design legacy is entering basic infrastructure. In July 2026, Columbus and ColumBUS Transit announced $329,940 in state funding to construct three artistic bus shelters. They build on a prototype designed by Indiana University J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program students in 2024 and installed at NexusPark in 2025. The People Trail system makes another everyday connection between civic design and movement. These low-stress bicycle and pedestrian routes link schools, parks, arts and architecture, and other destinations, and the Parks and Recreation Department maintains them. At the 32-acre Mill Race Park, a trailhead sits near an amphitheater, observation tower, boat launch, fishing areas, and playground. Festival installations, transit shelters, and the trail network therefore place design along ordinary trips downtown, waits for a bus, and time spent outdoors.
