About Columbus

Columbus is Polk County's seat, a town deliberately carved out in 1855 from 100 acres near Foster's Mountain. The commissioners laid out a rectangular street plan, reserved a public square, and sold lots to pay for county buildings; the courthouse was in use by December 1857 and still stands at the center. Green River Plantation and the J. Hughes House add older country-house chapters beyond the square, while N.C. 108, U.S. 74, and I-26 frame the town's newer connections. Columbus is a western North Carolina county seat whose map begins with a courthouse plan and opens into mountain roads.
