Commerce, OK

Commerce is an Ottawa County city five miles north of Miami on U.S. 69, the highway that follows the old Route 66 corridor through this part of northeastern Oklahoma. The 2020 census counted 2,269 residents. Commerce Public Schools, the city utility department, local stores, and the short drive to Miami cover the basics, while the wider Tri-State area supplies more jobs and services. The town sits in a landscape where farm and ranch work now share space with the remains of the old mining belt.

Commerce began as Hattonville, a lead-and-zinc camp that grew after Amos Hatton developed the Emma Gordon mine in 1906. The Commerce Mining and Royalty Company gave the town its later name, and an interurban railway arrived in 1908–09 to move workers and ore. Mining declined after mid-century, leaving farming, production work, and commuting in its place. Mickey Mantle grew up here, but the town's deeper story is the way land assigned to the Quapaw became a rail-and-mine community and then a small highway city.
