Concrete, WA

Concrete sits where Baker River meets Skagit River in north-central Skagit County, and almost every chapter of town history starts with that junction. The west-bank settlement was first called Minnehaha and later Baker; Cement City grew across the river around Washington Portland Cement Company in 1905. The two communities merged as Concrete in 1909, and the town incorporated that year. Fires on Main Street before 1921 led later commercial buildings to use concrete, leaving a downtown where the building material became part of the town's signature.

The river corridor still carries the practical map. Concrete is near the Baker River hydroelectric project and the route to Baker Lake and North Cascades country; the town's municipal airport and historic bridge sit within that larger landscape. The Sbaliuqw Interpretive Trail follows the Lower Baker through downtown, connecting salmon habitat, Upper Skagit history, hydroelectric development, and the old cement works. Concrete is a river town where an industrial name, a bridge, and the surrounding mountains all point to the same geography.
