Condon, OR

Condon is the county seat of Gilliam County, set along Oregon Route 19 in the dry farming and ranching country of north-central Oregon. The city's historic Main Street carries much of its visual character, with the Condon Commercial Historic District listed on the National Register in 1998. Condon began as the southern terminus of the Union Pacific's Condon Branch, tying the town's early growth to rail service across the plateau. From 1951 to 1970, Condon Air Force Station added a radar chapter to that railroad-and-ranching story.

Burns Park holds the Gilliam County Historical Museum complex, where a train depot, caboose, church, barber shop, jail, schoolhouse, and other restored buildings gather the county's past in one place. Condon's calendar carries its own local signatures, including Robert Burns Day, the Tumbleweed Basketball Tournament, the Fabulous 4 July, and a fall festival. The John Day River country, Cottonwood Canyon, Lonerock, and the John Day Fossil Beds are all within reach. The 2020 census counted 711 residents, but Condon still works as a full county center.
