Conehatta, MS

Conehatta is a Newton County community within the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians reservation. Its name comes from Conehatta Creek, and the creek, pine woods, and small roads give the community its local geography. Conehatta is one of the MBCI communities in east-central Mississippi, where tribal government, Choctaw culture, and county life meet. The tribe's constitution was ratified in 1945, giving the Mississippi Band a formal government after generations of Choctaw families remained in the state.

Education and youth programs cross both systems. Newton County School District serves local students, while Native American students can attend the Choctaw Tribal School System. The Mississippi Band's Boys & Girls Club operates a Conehatta unit for young people from area schools. Conehatta's place is not captured by a city boundary: it is a designated community on a tribal reservation, tied to the creek, tribal programs, schools, and roads toward Newton County towns.
