Conestee, SC

Conestee is an unincorporated Greenville County community on the Reedy River, just downstream from Greenville. It began as a mill village on land Vardry McBee purchased in 1815, and the old Conestee Mill, dam, company buildings, and worker housing still give the place its industrial outline. The mill dam created Lake Conestee in 1892 for hydroelectric power, so the lake is not a separate resort story—it is part of the same water-and-work system that built the village.

Today the old mill landscape shares the map with Lake Conestee Nature Park and Preserve, a large stretch of wetlands, woods, trails, and boardwalk along the Reedy River. McBee Methodist Church, the nineteenth-century octagonal chapel built for mill workers, and Conestee Mill are both listed historic properties. Conestee Park adds ball fields, walking paths, and access toward the preserve, while Greenville, Mauldin, and Gantt press in around the community. The local picture is a neat contrast: a former textile village with very old buildings, a lake made by industry, and a nature preserve that lets the river corridor keep doing something new.
