Conicville, VA

Conicville occupies the northeast end of Cabin Hill ridge in Shenandoah County, where Conicville Road meets State Route 42, also known as Senedo Road. Swiss and German immigrants reached this part of the Shenandoah Valley through Pennsylvania in the mid-1700s. The settlement was first called Cabin Hill, then took the name Conicville in 1892 when a post office required a distinct name. By the late nineteenth century, the crossroads held stores, a blacksmith, a wagon shop, a doctor’s office, a school, and other businesses.

Most of that commercial line has disappeared, but the road pattern and rural setting remain. Christ Church and older homes sit among farms and wooded ridges, while Swover Creek runs along the valley below. Conicville’s daily life now involves school and work trips, agricultural routines, church connections, and drives to larger Shenandoah County towns. The intersection still gives the community its shape: two roads crossing at a ridge end, with houses and fields extending outward. Conicville is a small place, but its history shows how a few families, a post office, and a crossroads could create a durable village name in the Shenandoah Valley.
