Conkling Park, ID

Conkling Park is a small census-designated place on the southern end of Lake Coeur d’Alene in Kootenai County, near the Coeur d’Alene Reservation and Harrison Slough. Conkling Park Road meets U.S. 95 and runs through a landscape of lake coves, wooded hills, waterfront roads, and scattered homes. The local map is organized around the road, the shore, and the surrounding reservation landscape, with the water doing most of the geographic work.

Heyburn State Park lies south of the community and carries the region’s most developed recreation infrastructure. Idaho created the park in 1908 from land associated with the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation; today it covers thousands of acres of land and water around Chatcolet, Benewah, and Hidden lakes. Boating, fishing, camping, hiking, paddling, and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes all extend the lake-country setting around Conkling Park. As a CDP, Conkling Park’s everyday life is organized through roads, shore access, nearby state-park facilities, county services, and the tribal landscape. The community sits close to the route toward Plummer and Heyburn, with Lake Coeur d’Alene to the north and the park’s lakes and trails to the south. It is a shoreline place first, with the larger Idaho Panhandle recreation map close by.
