Convent, LA

Convent is a small, quiet community on the east bank of the Mississippi River, sitting roughly midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. With around 500 residents, it has a relaxed, rural feel while serving as the parish seat for St. James Parish. Most local civic activity centers along Highway 44, where you will find the parish courthouse, a public library branch, and government offices that serve the surrounding area.

The town took its name from a 19th-century Catholic convent established along the river and became the parish seat in 1869 when local government moved over from the west bank. Its history is closely tied to Mississippi River trade, sugar cane farming, and deep French Catholic roots. Landmark sites like St. Michael the Archangel Church and the historic Jefferson College grounds reflect that past, telling a story shaped by plantation agriculture, enslaved laborers, and centuries of River Parish heritage.

Like much of the region between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Convent blends its open countryside with major industry along the river. The sprawling Shell facility has long been an economic anchor here, with plans underway to transition into cleaner energy projects.
