Coon Rapids, MN

Coon Rapids has deep roots along the Mississippi River, growing from a historic trading route and a 1910s hydroelectric dam into one of the north metro’s most established communities. What started as a rugged ox cart trail heading north from St. Paul is now Coon Rapids Boulevard, the city’s primary commercial spine. The old power dam has long since retired from energy production, giving way to a scenic regional park that serves as a favorite local landmark. Today, the city blends that riverfront history with classic suburban convenience just twenty minutes north of Minneapolis.

The Mississippi River defines the southern border, while Coon Creek and Sand Creek wind through quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhoods. Daily errands usually center around two main corridors: Coon Rapids Boulevard to the south, home to Mercy Hospital and Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and the massive Riverdale Village retail hub along Highway 10 to the north. When you want to get out on the water, Cenaiko Lake sits nestled near the river, while Crooked Lake offers a popular public beach and boat launch on the north side of town.

Healthcare is anchored by Mercy Hospital, which draws top medical specialists and serves as one of the area’s largest employers. Right down the road, Anoka-Ramsey Community College sits on scenic riverfront bluffs, hosting theater productions, art exhibits, and community concerts throughout the year. For shopping and dining, Riverdale Village has virtually every big-box store and casual restaurant you could need.
