Cooper City, FL

Cooper City got its start in the late 1950s when developer Morris Cooper bought up citrus groves and cattle pastures near the edge of the Everglades. It began as a quiet, carefully planned enclave of just a few dozen homes, and growth was slow in the early years. Cooper even had to set up his own private utility company and a local country club to help draw newcomers westward. Over the decades, those modest beginnings grew into one of Broward County’s most desirable suburban communities, known for its quiet tree-lined streets, generous lot sizes, and neighborhood feel.

As the region expanded, older agricultural acreage gradually made way for newer master-planned neighborhoods like Monterra, built across the former Waldrep Dairy property in the 2000s. Today, the city is almost entirely residential and essentially built out, giving its subdivisions a settled, mature character. Green space is woven right into daily routines. Small pocket parks and playgrounds sit tucked inside individual neighborhoods, while larger facilities like the Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex and Flamingo West Park offer open playing fields, walking paths, and lake views.

One of the city's biggest recreation highlights is Brian Piccolo County Park, home to the only cycling velodrome in Florida. Its steep, banked competition track and paved outer loops attract cyclists and inline skaters from across South Florida. Piccolo Park also serves as the main stage for Founders Day each March. The whole town turns out for a morning 5K and pancake breakfast, followed by a lively parade from the Community Center down to Cooper City High School and an afternoon of festival rides, food trucks, and fireworks at the park.

Day to day, residents stay active through a solid network of community centers. The main Community Center on Southwest 50th Place manages youth aftercare, summer camps, and social programs for seniors. Across town in Stonebridge, the Pool and Tennis Center is a favorite spot for swimming laps, shooting hoops, or getting into weekend tennis and pickleball games. With its top-rated public schools, active parks, and relaxed pace, Cooper City offers newcomers a classic hometown atmosphere right in the middle of South Florida.
