Coopers Plains, NY

Coopers Plains is a hamlet and census-designated place spread across the towns of Erwin and Campbell in Steuben County, New York. It occupies valley bottomland between the Cohocton River and Meads Creek, extending toward their confluence. New York Route 415 passes through the north side, while Interstate 86 forms the northern edge and links the community to Painted Post and Corning. The 2020 census counted 609 residents. Corning City School District serves the area, tying the hamlet to the larger city just to the southeast.

Water and highways give Coopers Plains its practical shape. The Cohocton carries the valley toward the Chemung and Susquehanna system, while Route 415 and I-86 connect the lowlands to the Southern Tier road network. Gang Mills borders the community to the south, adding another nearby settlement to the local map. Coopers Plains is a place defined by its position between rivers and roads: a small residential community in the Corning orbit, with the valley floor and the highway corridor doing most of the organizing.
