Coos Bay, OR

Coos Bay wraps around the largest natural harbor between San Francisco and Puget Sound, giving it a sprawling layout shaped by inlets, bridges, and forested hills. The city came together from three older waterfront settlements, and locals still use their original neighborhood names. Downtown, historically known as Marshfield, serves as the main commercial strip along Highway 101. Over to the west, Empire offers a quiet residential pocket near the boat basins, while Eastside curves along the opposite shoreline. Along with its twin city of North Bend, Coos Bay forms the largest community on the Oregon coast, offering a comfortable mix of maritime grit and small-town charm.

Historically built on timber and commercial fishing, the bay remains an active working port, but the local economy has broadened over the years. Today, the city serves as the regional hub for healthcare, education, and retail along the southern coast. Bay Area Hospital is one of the largest employers around, and Southwestern Oregon Community College provides both degree programs and community events. You will find all the essential conveniences right in town, from grocery and hardware stores to local coffee roasters, so you rarely have to travel over the mountains to Eugene for everyday errands.

Day-to-day life is laid-back and tightly connected to the water and the surrounding wilderness. The downtown boardwalk is a great spot to grab lunch from a dockside fish market, watch harbor seals, or check out local exhibits at the waterfront history museum. Running fans will appreciate the town's pride in hometown track legend Steve Prefontaine, celebrated with murals and museum displays. A short drive outside town takes you to the sheltered beach at Sunset Bay, the rugged ocean viewpoints at Shore Acres State Park, and the vast Oregon Dunes, making the area an appealing, unpretentious base for coastal living.
