Copeland, OK

Copeland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Delaware County, Oklahoma, along U.S. 59 between Grove and the Grand Lake area. An earlier community called Rabbit became Copeland or Copeland Switch, named for resident D. R. Copeland. The Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad reached this part of the county in 1912–13, giving the settlement its first strong connection to the regional map.

The railroad is gone, though its route still shows up in the landscape. The line was abandoned in 1966, and part of the former grade, including the Horse Creek bridge, became State Highway 85A. U.S. 59 leads south about six miles to Grove and follows the community toward the northern shore of Grand Lake, so roads and lake-edge geography now do the connecting work. Copeland covers a rural and residential footprint, with the named CDP spread across roads and lake-edge land. Its local story is the handoff from a railroad settlement to a named lake-country community, with the old line, the highway, and Grand Lake all visible in the same map.
