About Cordova
Cordova is a Richmond County community along the Pee Dee River, with a post-office story that reaches back further than the current CDP label. The area had a post office called Steeles Mill as early as 1828; a Cordova post office followed in 1899. That older name points to the mill-and-river landscape that shaped southwest Richmond County, while the Pee Dee still gives the community its geographic edge. Cordova is now an unincorporated place and former CDP, with Rockingham as the larger nearby town. The local read is simple: a river community whose name changed, whose mill history came first, and whose roads still follow the Pee Dee side of the county.
