Corning, IA

Corning is Adams County's seat, a southwest Iowa town where the courthouse, U.S. 34, and the road to Lake Icaria meet. Its best-known hometown story belongs to Johnny Carson, whose birthplace is preserved in town, though Corning's older history reaches back to the French Icarians who came from Nauvoo in 1852. Their community, established a few miles east, lasted into the late 1800s and left Corning with one of the country's clearest surviving Icarian connections. The Corning post office adds another small piece of history: Marion Gilmore's 1941 mural, Band Concert, still hangs inside.
