Costa Mesa, CA

Costa Mesa is spread out across distinct hubs, each with its own personality. Up north around South Coast Metro, you will find the retail giant South Coast Plaza alongside the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This pocket is polished and energetic, drawing visitors from across Southern California for shopping, Broadway tours, and concerts. Beyond the commercial high-rises, quiet residential streets, family-owned taco spots, and neighborhood parks give the city a relaxed coastal feel. Over on the western edge, Fairview Park provides a huge open stretch of bluffs overlooking the Santa Ana River.

Fairview Park feels like an escape from suburban Orange County. Its rolling grasslands, wetlands, and vernal pools host local wildlife, connect directly to regional river trails, and catch cool ocean breezes. The land holds deep ancestral significance for the Tongva and Acjachemen tribes, which has helped protect it from heavy commercial development. Locals head here to walk their dogs, fly model airplanes, watch the sunset, and enjoy peaceful nature paths without leaving town.

Much of central Costa Mesa took shape after World War II, when the old Santa Ana Army Air Base was parceled out. That history explains why Orange Coast College, Vanguard University, City Hall, and the OC Fair & Event Center are clustered together along Fair Drive. Down on Bristol Street, that same repurposing spirit sparked the indie culture Costa Mesa is famous for. In the 1990s, an old military factory was transformed into The LAB Anti-Mall. Together with The CAMP across the street, the surrounding SoBECA district offers vintage shops, craft breweries, third-wave coffee roasters, and plant-filled outdoor patios.

Getting around is straightforward, though main thoroughfares like Harbor, Newport, and Bristol Boulevards can get crowded during peak commute hours. Neighborhood vibes shift depending on where you settle. The Eastside offers tree-lined streets, great walkability to 17th Street coffee shops, and quick bike rides down to Newport Beach, while the Westside has an eclectic mix of surf industry headquarters, live-work lofts, and residential homes. Summer brings a major seasonal rhythm when the OC Fair takes over the fairgrounds every July and August, bringing live concerts, exhibits, and community energy right into the heart of town.
