Cottonport, LA

Cottonport is an Avoyelles Parish town in central Louisiana. The 2020 census counted 2,023 residents. Its name and early economy grew from the cotton trade, while the present map follows the roads, stores, schools, and parish services that connect the community to the rest of Avoyelles Parish. Cottonport's public-school story began in 1835, when Joseph Ducote donated land for a road and school, a reminder that education and transportation were part of the settlement's foundation from the start.

Each December, the Cottonport Christmas Festival brings a town tradition onto the civic calendar. That event sits alongside ordinary institutions: town government, local businesses, churches, and schools. Cottonport's story is tied to two kinds of movement—cotton moving through an early river-and-road settlement, and people moving through a present-day town whose festival and daily services give the place a recognizable center.
