Cottonwood CDP (Shasta County), CA

Cottonwood is a Shasta County census-designated place on Cottonwood Creek, close to the Sacramento River and the southern end of the county. The community began as an Oregon Trail supply stop, became a postal station in 1852, and took shape after Jacob Foster bought land on the north side of Cottonwood Creek in 1859. Southern Pacific's arrival in 1872 turned the settlement into a shipping point for cattle, lumber, and farm products. That sequence still shows in the place name: creek, road, rail, and agricultural valley all meet here.

Today's map includes Cottonwood Union School District at 20512 West First Street, North Cottonwood Elementary on Gas Point Road, and Cottonwood Creek Charter School on Main Street. Cottonwood Fire Protection District covers emergency service from its Brush Street station, while the old Cottonwood Historic District retains a depot, former school and Grange Hall, and First Baptist Church on Bush Street. Main Street and the creek valley carry the town's present rhythm, with the historic buildings and school district making the older shipping stop legible. Cottonwood still reads as a working valley community whose past is visible in its roads, creek, school, and rail-era buildings.
