Council, ID

Council is Adams County's seat in west-central Idaho, set between Cuddy Mountain and Council Mountain. The city incorporated in 1903, but its route story is older: trails up the Weiser River carried pack trains from Boise toward the Warren and Florence gold camps. Today U.S. 95 runs through town, and the Weiser River still gives Council its basic shape. It is a county-seat town with mountain walls close on both sides and a river corridor running through the middle.

The local calendar is where Council gets wonderfully specific. On July 4, the city holds its porcupine races, a strange old event built around local youth, wild porcupines, and a return-to-the-wild finish. The Mountain Music Festival takes over Veterans Memorial Peace Park each August, and the 84-mile Weiser River Trail passes through town on its way between Weiser and New Meadows. Add the city airport and Adams County fair-and-rodeo activity, and Council's map comes into focus: county-seat work during the week, trail and river access outside town, and a couple of annual events that make the place memorable.
