Country Club, FL

Country Club takes its name from a public golf complex that arrived before most of the surrounding development. The Country Club of Miami opened in 1961 with two Robert Trent Jones courses, and Arnold Palmer served as its first golf professional. Comedian Jackie Gleason lived nearby and hosted celebrity players; Jack Nicklaus played his first professional tournament there. Fairways, lakes, and residential streets subsequently became the physical center of a rapidly growing northwest Miami-Dade community. Country Club grew from 3,408 residents in 1990 to 49,967 in 2020. That growth turned an isolated golf property into a large unincorporated residential area, with the namesake course still occupying its center and shaping the street pattern around it.

Miami-Dade County provides the municipal services and land-use rules. A 2014 county designation defined the Country Club of Miami area between Northwest 167th and 202nd streets and Northwest 57th and roughly 77th or 78th avenues. Miramar and the Broward County line are to the north, Miami Lakes is south, and Palm Springs North adjoins the west. Miami Gardens Drive crosses the area, Northwest 67th Avenue provides a north-south route, and the Palmetto Expressway runs along the southern edge. Housing includes detached homes, townhouses, and large apartment complexes arranged around the golf courses and arterial roads. This produces a decentralized pattern: residential streets turn inward from busy corridors, and daily services cluster along Miami Gardens Drive, Northwest 67th Avenue, and commercial properties toward the east.

The county has long considered a denser mixed-use center near Northwest 57th and 59th avenues. A 2005 charrette proposed a main street, blocks, squares, and a waterway plaza there. The Country Club Urban Area zoning district adopted in 2014 implemented part of that vision by allowing retail, offices, restaurants, hotels, housing, and civic uses under an urban-center code. The zoning is a framework for development, and the original town-center drawings were long-range proposals. Existing community facilities remain dispersed. North Pointe Community Center provides a gym, fitness classes, a beach-entry pool, and a splash playground. The Palm Springs North Branch Library operates near Northwest 78th Avenue, and small county parks occupy sites within the residential sections. Metrobus Route 183 follows the 183rd Street and 67th Avenue corridor, while Route 199 connects the Red Road transit hub with Miami Gardens and Aventura Mall.

The golf complex itself was unavailable during the summer of 2026. Miami-Dade closed the Country Club of Miami on April 6 for a comprehensive course and clubhouse renovation, with no reopening date announced as of August 2, 2026. Miami-Dade funded a multi-year project to reconfigure the existing 36 holes into a 39-hole complex and renovate the clubhouse. The work was still in progress on that date. This temporary closure is consequential because the course has supplied the area’s name, open green space, recreation, and street pattern since 1961. Residents still have the North Pointe pool and gym, branch library, neighborhood parks, and bus corridors, but golf activity must wait for the county project. For now, the fairways remain visually central behind residential streets even as construction interrupts the public use that first put Country Club on the map.
